Job Summary

Location: Delta, B.C

In this dynamic, fast-paced environment, the Mechanical Designer is responsible for designing new fireplace products. This position will utilize critical thinking to solve complex mechanical problems, creating best in class products that are aesthetically pleasing, efficient to manufacture and operate, reliable, and safe for the consumer. Reporting to the Director, Product Design, the incumbent is responsible for managing projects throughout the entire product development cycle, from initial brief to production implementation.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create designs for mass manufacture which meet aesthetic, performance, cost, and delivery targets, including production ready SolidWorks models, drawings, and associated documentation
  • Build & prepare prototypes for testing and demonstration
  • Generate creative solutions to testing and manufacturing challenges
  • Collaborate with various internal departments to ensure designs are compliant with test standards, allow for efficient manufacturing and reliable service
  • Collaborate within the Product Development team, utilizing the team’s diverse range of skills and experience to review and discuss feedback on designs
  • Participate in project presentations to key internal stakeholders, showcasing product designs and prototypes; ensure feedback is addressed and/or implemented, and actively seek opportunities to improve the product
  • Maintain a customer focused mindset while ensuring all details which would impact a product’s success are considered; prioritize requirements and find the best combination of competing needs to achieve a high-quality end product 
  • Design products with sustainable environmental impacts in mind
  • Maintain professionalism and act in a manner consistent with FPI mission and guiding principles
  • Follow all organizational Health & Safety programs; actively participate in Health & Safety training with the purpose of gaining knowledge and understanding
  • Contribute to a positive work environment focusing on Lean and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Other related duties as required 

Abilities/Skills/Knowledge

  • Technical and creative problem-solving skills; demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Strong organizational skills; able to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability work both independently and with a team
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal) skills
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with multiple internal departments
  • Familiar with Solid Works or equivalent 3-D CAD modeling
  • Familiar with MS Office (Excel/Word/Outlook) and other PC based software
  • Sheet Metal Design experience an asset
  • Knowledge of strength of materials, cooling and heat transfer techniques an asset
  • Knowledge of combustion principles/theories is an asset

Education/Training

  • University/Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or related field

Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment
